School risk assessments
Vehicle movement within the school site
What precautions or procedures are currently in place intended to make the harm less likely to happen?
Physical controls:
Adequate and authoritative supervision levels at start / end of school day :
One-way system in place (useful to avoid the need for vehicles to reverse) :
Separate designated, signed and well constructed pedestrian routes :
Suitable barriers or guard rails at entrances to and exits from buildings, and at the corners of buildings, to prevent pedestrians walking straight on to roads :
Designated parking areas for staff / visitors :
Designated and signed reversing / offloading areas please note that all 'reversing areas' should be clearly identified and marked, and be visible to drivers and pedestrians :
Adequate direction signs in place such as Give Way, No Entry etc :
Speed restriction devices for example road humps or bollards to restrict the width of road (please note that these should always be preceded by a warning sign or a mark on the road) :
Prominent warning given of any limited headroom (both in advance and at the obstruction itself) :
All roads and vehicle manoeuvring areas are adequately lit (particular attention must be given to areas near junctions, buildings, pedestrian areas) :
Adequate road markings in place to direct vehicles (Please note that any road signs used to warn or inform should comply with the design prescribed by The Traffic Signs Regulations and General Directions 2002 and set out in the Highway code) :
Speed limits are clearly signposted on vehicle routes :
Mirrors positioned on blind spots :
Signed pedestrian crossings (please note that where signs have to be visible at night, they will need to be illuminated and/or reflectorised) :
Barriers or rails provided to prevent pedestrians crossing at particularly dangerous points :
Traffic routes are wide enough for the safe movement of the largest vehicle permitted (they should also be wide enough to allow vehicles to pass oncoming or parked vehicles safely without leaving the route, if this is not practicable then passing places should be introduced) :
Effective safety rails or bollards to protect vulnerable objects / items e.g. gas, oil or chemical storage tanks, pipes:
Procedural controls:
Designated times of access and restriction or prohibition of access. For example where groups of pupils are likely to walk on to roadways at the end of the school day (consideration should be given to stopping vehicles from using the routes at these times) :
Sensible speed limits set e.g. 10mph :
Designated times of access for delivery vehicles :
Please specify any other controls you have established locally that are not mentioned above:
