Description: (Area: ST 98157035). There are two main contemporary references to the finding of the remains of a Roman building in a field called Clotley (identified from Tithe Map) on Berril's Farm, between Calne and Studley. The farm is described as half a mile from Calne and the field on high ground and half a mile nearer Studley. In Jauary 1753 the farmer, digging for stone, came upon walling; digging was apparently continued after the harvest later in that year. Structural remains comprised a 'cistern' or bath formed by walling about 8 feet high with'polished' mortar (stucco?) with a bench or wall-seat and three feet away a hypocaust with fireholes and tile-pillars. Many of the tiles were stamped I.V.C. DIGNI, a manufacturer's mark known elsewhere in Britain. To the south of this hypocaust was another 'Cistern' and walling. Finds, most of which were with Dr. Davies, included a coin of Diocletian, part of a bronze fibula, a lead handle, lead piping, oyster shells, ashes and bones, 'perhaps human'. The The hypocaust was rebuilt in a greenhouse at Studley House. The Stukeley MSS also refer to a coin of Carausius found at Studley and to Stukeley receiving eleven unspecified coins from Mr. Hungerford in October 1753, but their association with the building site is not established, though Hoare commented that 'numerous' coins had been found. There are numerous later references in archaeological literature to the site, but they are all derived from the contemporary 1753 accounts. Grinsell gives the NGR as ST 98417095, '200 yards east of Studley-brook Farm' but this is taken from a siting by Crawford and Passmore which does not fall in the field named Clotley. Field Investigators Comments, ANK 18-NOV-1968 - Clotley field is at present under stubble with no visible evidence for Roman occupation. No further information.
