Description: An air raid shelter associated with Alton Barnes Airfield, one of the few extant remains of the Airfield buildings. The Shelter was constructed during World War Two. It is located alongside a road 500 yards north of the bridge over the Kennet and Avon Canal. Positioned on the air raid shelter is a memorial stone dedicated to five airmen who lost their lives through aircraft crashes whilst training at the base. The stone was erected in 1999 by The Wiltshire Historical Military Society, funded through public donations. The stone features the Royal Air Force badge above a dedication to the five men of Number 29 Elementary Flying Training School.

Description: Alton Barnes Airfield Memorial. On 18th of September 1999, Wiltshire Historical Military Society (WHMS) erected a memorial to five men of the 29th Elementary Flying Training School (EFTS) who died in Aircraft crashes whilst training at the airfield in 1941. It is situated on an air raid shelter located alongside a road 500 yards North of the canal bridge. The stone features the Royal Air Force badge over a short dedication and the names of the five men: Pilot Officer JK Holmes, DFC, RAF, 18th June 1941; Pilot Officer A Gibbons RAFVR, 18th June 1941; Sergeant KO Bate RAFVR 18 June 1941; Squadron Leader WB Beale RAF 4th September 1941; Pilot Officer GH Brown RAFVR 4th September 1941. Below the names are the words "Sunward I've climbed and joined the tumbling mirth- Put out my hand and touched the face of God", followed by the initials of the society, WHMS.
