Title: Wings Over Wiltshire: An Aeronautical History of Wiltshire

Summary: Publication Source ID: SWI22354

Description: A disused World War II aerodrome, constructed in June 1941. It had three concrete and tarmac runways and a complete perimeter track. The buildings included a guard room, a control tower, at least 2 hangars, a station HQ, an operations block and a Battle HQ. The Fire Tender shed and 3 Romney type huts survive as does a large part of the perimeter track, and a section of the main runway. It opened in 1942: the airfield was initially intended for the Royal Air Force, but was assigned to the United States Army 8th Air Force 64th Troop Carrier Group. When the unit departed for the invasion of North Africa the airfield was utilized as a satellitte of RAF Andover, for training units. In 1943 the airfield was taken over by the American 9th Air Force 437th Troop Carrier Group. They were involved in the Airborne assault element of D Day. After the war the airfield was used for short periods by Transport Command and Fighter Command of the RAF and became a sub- station of RAF Yatesbury. Flying ceased in 1946 and the site became inactive. At the time this source was published (2003), visible remains included Romney huts and the operations block. The source contains photographs of the site and a plan of the airfield as it appeared in 1944.

Description: A World War II airfield is visible and has been mapped from aerial photographs. Before 1943 it was a satellite station of RAF Andover(Hants) and from 1943 was used by No.11 Troop Carrier Command of the US Air Force. After the war the airfield was used for short periods by Transport Command and Fighter Command of the RAF and became a sub station of RAF Yatesbury. The airfield was disposed of by the state in 1955. The alignment of parts of the runways are fossilised in trackways and Darrell's Farm is situated at the crossing of two runways, but much of the airfield has been dismantled and some parts of the perimeter are visible as cropmarks. Only the northern parts of the airfield have been mapped as the southern half is outside the survey area of the project for which it was mapped. Ramsbury Airfield, Wiltshire, SU 270 703. A World War Two military airfield. The airfield was equipped with three concrete and tarmac runways and two aircraft hangars (Type T2).
