Issue Summary

Westbury Road potential Speeding

Latest Update

CATG Action / Recommendation

06/04/2018 13:43:01 CATG 7 June 2018

The excessive speeds of some vehicles in Westbury Road. The volume of traffic has doubled in the 12 years I have lived in Westbury Road whilst the number of dwellings in this residential area has also increased. Emerging from ones property particularly when wishing to turn right is becoming more and more dangerous. Twice in the last few weeks I have been headlight flashed and hooted at by drivers travelling towards Warminster in excess of the speed limit. If tubes are laid I would like the opportunity to discuss the location with the appropriate persons. I also think that it would be beneficial for the views of local police officers to be heard regarding speeding vehicles especially in the morning and evening rush hours and school run times.

Issue Duration

Over a considerable period of time - years - but getting worse.

Who is Affected

Potentially car owners car drivers from 71 properties when they join Westbury Road either directly from their property or from the roads private drives off Westbury Road.

What has been done so far

Several years ago when the Speed Camera Partnership was in existence I liaised with the Police Sergeant in charge who organised for strips to be laid. The result was an average speed of 43mph. Unfortunately I believe that this method of assessment is fundamentally flawed for the following reasons notwithstanding that the speed limit in Westbury Road that is currently 40mph should be 30mph. The average speed is not relevant as it is the stats in each of the specific speed brackets that need to be looked at ie 40 - 50mph 50 - 60 mph and 60 - 70 mph etc. Also as an ex Roads Policing Special Constable I know that drivers instinctively slow when they see tubes in the road as they used to be used to prosecute speeding offences. Note an average speed count means that for every ten law abiding drivers doing 38mph two can do 50mph or one can do 60mph and the average still looks good. Nothing further was done at that time.

What would resolve issue

Primarily I would like to see the 40mph speed limit reduced to 30mph. In the short term I would like to see a digital speed indicator installed and a Community Speedwatch scheme set up. If the speed limit WAS lowered a Speedwatch scheme would still be extremely desirable.
