CATG Action / Recommendation

Road layout and verge errosion at the junction bottom of Stone Lane and Common Platt.Commercial vehicles and HGVs especially run wide entering Stone Lane and drive up and over the grass verge over the years this has been built back up and damaged time and time again. The worry is that there is a telegraph pole that is basically marking the edge of the highway when 23 years ago was sat in the middle of the verge the safe haven of a verge for people walking has disappeared. The road issue is that traffic uses the Washpool road through Common Platt and Washpool as a rat run and at speed this makes exiting Stone Lane risky at times as traffic has to edge out into the road to view on-coming traffic from the CommonPlattWashpool direction where there is a slight tightening bend making a blind spot and quick reactions a nessesity. There have been a number of vehicle accidents at this junction the last being approv 6 months ago when a car failed to stop and ended up in a Parishioners back garden some 2030 metre off the highway

Electoral Division

Wootton Bassett East

Issue Duration

At least 3 years plus Time that ive taken notice of issues within the Lydiard Parish

Who is Affected

Parishioners and road users within the area of Stone Lane Common Platt and Washpool as well as slightly furtehr on at Casa Palo corner with Purton Road this is a problem both ways of the highway

What has been done so far

The Parish Council have reported the verge issue and had repaired on a number of occassions. With regards the highways issue the Parish council have met with WCC representatives and Parishioners on a number of occassions and discussed issues but have untill recentlydecided not to potentially waste Parish funds on having infrastructure works done especially as the Casa Palo corner highway layout was not shared or known and how that may affect the Stone LaneCommon Platt junction

What would resolve issue

The Highways working group and with support of the Parish Council and an initial 2500.00 being lodged to kick-off a review and design of a better junction. We would like to see either a small RAB or priorityright of way change from the Casa Palo direction with possible chevron signage sending traffic up Stone Lane with a Stop line on the Common PlattWashpool Roadand dragons teeth road markings either side of the road to give an optical narrowing of the existing road there may also be a reshaping of the near side kerb making the turn re-direction of trafficinto Stone Lane smoother. With regards the verge we would like to see the use of multiple stacked kerb stones a deterant and means to stop errosion as well as raising the verge making it a safe haven for people walking along the road. We see this as a two part project that will be future proof baring in mind the additional traffic that we are seeing and will yet to see once Swindon have really messed up their own infrastructure.
