17/07/2017 11:49:52 Thank you for raising your issue with the Area Board. The Council has set up a way for local people to decide local highway improvement priorities. A local community area transport group (CATG) of local people and elected councillors comes together to consider issues and proposals and to recommend those schemes that can be taken forward in any year. Before the CATG can consider a proposal, it must first consult the local parish or town council. Only if the parish supports the issue will it be considered further. If your issue is supported by the parish council, it will be submitted to the CATG for consideration. The CATG will then decide whether it should go forward onto the list of priority schemes. Resources are very limited, so it is important that schemes are prioritised in this way. Obviously, not all schemes can be taken forward and some proposals may have to wait a while before they become a priority for funding. The CATG makes recommendations to the Area Board who will decide which schemes will be funded and taken forward. We will keep you informed of progress as we go through the steps outlined.

CATG Action / Recommendation

There is a dangerous road junction above Shalbourne where cars have to cross the A338 when travelling between Great Bedwyn and Shalbourne. It has been the cause of several car accidents over the years.

Residents of Shalbourne Great Bedwyn and many surrounding villagers. Also the number 20 bus.

I am a concerned resident I do not know if others have made any previous attempts to resolve this problem.

What would resolve issue

This dangerous junctioncrossing has been the cause of some serious road accidents during the years I have lived in Shalbourne and I believe the danger could be mitigated through the installation of a dome mirror at the junction. The crossing I am referring to is the one linking Shalbourne and Bedwyn and it is on the route of the number 20 bus. Cars travel along the A338 here at speeds in excess of 60mph as the road is very straight although narrow along this stretch. For cars crossing the A338 here the situation is particularly perilous when coming from Great Bedwyn and attempting to cross over and go down into Shalbourne. When waiting on the Great Bedwyn side of the junction and looking to the right to check for oncoming cars it is extremely difficult to see them because of the hidden dips in the road and when cars are approaching at excessive speed this increases the danger. It can also be difficult to see cars approaching from the left from the Hungerford direction especially when the verges are overgrown but at least these cars are on the other side of the road. There is currently a dome mirror in use a mile to the north along the A338 beside the cottages in the dip by Bagshot where the road crosses the stream - this enables the residents of the cottages to pull out onto the road in safety as cars hurtle down the main road here at great speed and can be seen more easily thanks to the mirror. It strikes me that the same device could be extremely helpful - and indeed could reduce the frequency of accidents - if installed on the verge on the Shalbourne side of the BedwynShalbourne junction. If positioned at a suitable height it could ensure that cars approaching at speed in the hidden dips on the A338 were visible to drivers at the crossing who at drivers seat height would not have been able to see these cars coming.

Who needs to come together

I do not know if approval is required for the siting of such a device. I believe that Shalbourne Parish Council would pay for it if we are permitted to use one.
