Issue Summary

Latest Update

11/12/2017 14:25:55 Work previously carried out by Transitions Marlboroughs Cycling Group has identified a cycle network throughout the town that keeps cyclists away from major roads such as the A4. From Manton and west of Marlborough, it suggests using either Golding Ave Morris Rd and College Fields or Bridge St Preshute Rd and Treacle Bolly to get to the town centre. A map of this cycle network can be found on Wiltshire Councils website http://www.wiltshire.gov.uk/walk-cycle-marlborough-cycling-map.pdf These matters can be discussed at the next Marlborough CATG meeting in February 18. Before it gets onto this agenda, this issue will need to be agreed by Marlborough TC.

Issue

No cycle route on Bath Road A4 west of College out to Barton Park turnManton village turnDowns LaneManton Hollow turn. The Bath Road west of Marlborough is a very hazardous route for cyclists. There are no cycle paths or painted routes on the road surface and the road itself has painted centre margins that force traffic into the kerbside along most of its length.Marlborough has a critical parking issue and we should be encouraging residents to walk or cycle into town from the communities within 1 mile of the centre. At present most residents use their cars for this short journey increasing peak time congestion air pollution and noise. The NHS has published various guidance documents championing the benefits of individuals getting more exercise. While a comprehensive Dutch style road remodelling may be impractical for the Bath Road cycle ways would also help to calm traffic by making drivers adjust their thinking from country road to modern urban community. This would be a major development in Marlborough being perceived as a cycle friendly town where vehicles cyclists and pedestrians can exist together with less danger.
