CATG Action / Recommendation

11/12/2017 14:14:26 These matters can be discussed at the next Marlborough CATG meeting in February 18. Before it gets onto this agenda, this issue will need to be agreed by Marlborough TC.

Issue

Inappropriate speed limit on A4 Bath Road Marlborough from vicinity of College west out to town boundary. Currently is 40mph to just west of Manton village turn rising to 60mph west to town boundary. The current position is that drivers emerging from either Downs Lane Manton House estate and Manton Hollow the Manton turn Manton main village or emerging from the houses fronting on to the Bath Road opposite Downs Lane regularly have to turn out into 60mph traffic. Those houses including new developments adjacent to the road to the east of the Manton turn have to cope with traffic passing at 40mph some with restricted exit visibility due to the road bend. Staff and visitor access and exit to the College boarding houses along this section of road is also very difficult. There has been a catalogue of accidents to underline the hazards of this stretch of road.Today the traffic volumes particularly HGVs are significantly greater than 10 years ago underlined by the recent Herd St traffic survey. For Bath Road residents and neighbours this has resulted not only in the increased driving hazard but in far greater noise day and night and it is suspected environmental pollution. This is not helped by the high noise generated by vehicle tyres as a result of the economy road surface finish.
