Issue Summary

dangerous cycling on Wilton Rd

Latest Update

03/11/2017 14:30:01 Dear Mr. Marshall I am writing further to the Area Board Issue (No. 5715) that you recently raised concerning cyclists riding on the footway along Wilton Road, Salisbury. As you identified in the form you submitted the shared use path on Wilton Road finishes at the traffic signals outside of the Halfway House pub. Depending on their direction of travel cyclists should either re-join the carriageway and head towards the city centre or cross the road and re-join the shared use path that takes them towards Bemerton Heath. From memory there is both a sign asking cyclists to dismount and a painted marking indicating the end of the shared use path outside of the Halfway House. This should make it clear to cyclists that they are not permitted to cycle on the footway from that point on. The agency responsible for managing Wilton Road is Highways England rather than Wiltshire Council. This is because Wilton Road forms part of the national trunk road network which Highways England are responsible for maintaining. Unfortunately, this means that you will need to raise a request for additional / improved signage of the end of the shared use path directly with Highways England who in turn will investigate the matter and provide you with a response. You can contact Highways England by emailing info@highwaysengland.co.uk or phoning 0300 123 5000. For your information Area Board Issue 5715 will now be closed, however, I hope that the above information is of use.

Cst reports cyclists cycle along pavement past his house often at speed which is dangerous when coming out of house. He said his grandchild almost got run over by cyclist when he came out house the cyclist in question shouted this is a cycleway and rode off. But the cycleway and signs stop by Hathway House pub on Wilton Road A36.
